Speak with someone who understands.
Hi, my name is James (彭征文). I’m a 1.5-generation migrant in New Zealand, and an Asian Counseller and Coach.
Navigating my identity, breaking intergenerational patterns, and finding my place between two cultures have been some of the hardest, and most meaningful parts of my journey. It's also what led me to become a counsellor, so that others like me don't have to walk it alone.
Together we will navigate the unique challenges of growing up between cultures, understand and let go of unhelpful intergenerational patterns, and build a future that is on your terms. My hope is that you leave with a stronger sense of who you are and find the belonging you deserve.
What I may help with
Identity and
Self-Worth
As immigrants or children of immigrants, many of us experience a lack of belonging, an unclear sense of who we are, or invisible barriers to building the life we want. This may come from growing up between cultures, feeling boxed in by how others see us, the pressure to fit in, or a strict and sheltered upbringing. Whatever the cause, there is a way forward.
Together, let's expand and deepen who you are, on your terms.
Counselling for Asian Men
Navigating personal growth or seeking support can be a uniquely lonely journey when so much of what's out there doesn't reflect your lived experience.
Here, you can speak with someone who understands.
Intergenerational Trauma & Inner Child Work
Our parents lived through incredible hardships, from what they survived in their home countries, to what it took to rebuild a life in a new one. That weight doesn't just disappear, and it shapes the way they parent.
And sometimes, this leaves a mark.
Together, we'll explore where those patterns still live in you, and work toward releasing the fears and beliefs that no longer serve you. My hope is for you to parent yourself with the compassion you needed but did not receive.
Your questions answered
Do you speak Chinese?
Unfortunately, I do not speak fluent Chinese.
I can understand small amounts of Cantonese and Mandarin, and have had clients speak to me in a mix of Chinese and English.
However, I will predominantly speak to you in English.
If you need a counsellor or coach who speaks fluent Chinese, I am more than happy to recommend someone to you.
Can I book from outside Auckland or NZ?
Absolutely.
I offer online sessions meaning anyone, no matter where you are in the world, can access my services. However, as I'm professionally registered as a counsellor only in New Zealand, I'm only able to offer coaching (rather than counselling) to clients based overseas.
Will my friends, family, or community find out that I am seeing you?
Absolutely not, unless you wish to tell them yourself.
I take your privacy very seriously, and I will never disclose my clients to others. To better understand how I protect your privacy, click here.
